If the venue or wedding planner offers you preferred vendors that's a good sign. If they offer you an in-house DJ service, check out the DJs reviews. Make sure you know the actual DJ you are getting. It's important that you can actually speak to and email the DJ during your planning stages. Notice I say that you research in-house DJs before you book the venue, as sometimes the DJs are included in the wedding package at the venue. If a great DJ and the music is important to you, it may be easier to bring in an outside DJ before the venue is booked.

It's fine to research DJs and read the reviews on outside websites. In fact, reputable websites often have a way to screen fake reviews. However, after you like the DJ, visit the DJs website directly to reach him or her. Contact the DJ using his or her email address, messenger, phone number, or contact form. Using third party websites may result in other DJs or vendors contacting you, and there is often a delay in response time. Furthermore, the DJ may choose not to buy your information from the third party, and therefore you won't get contacted at all. Use the DJs direct contact information for the best success and best price.
Popular dates fill up fast. If you see a DJ you like, book them as soon as your wedding date is set. This means making sure your wedding venue is booked. I'd say less than half the weekends in a year are popular. Less than 27 weekends. That means if your wedding is on a Saturday, the chances of finding available DJ, or any vendor, closer to the date becomes more difficult. If you know the DJ you want before the venue is booked, ask the DJ if your preferred dates are avaiable. The DJ may be able to hold a date for a few days while you confirm the venue.
The venue is booked. The DJ should have provided you with available dates. If you reached out and they held the date for you before you booked the venue, great! If not, pray that the date is still available. If so, pay the deposit, sign the contract, and you're ready to go!
